Sanders Calls For Snyder's Resignation In Wake Of Flint Water Crisis

LANSING (WWJ) -- U.S. Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is the latest to call for Governor Rick Snyder to resign over the Flint water crisis.

In a press release out Saturday, Sanders says there are no excuses for the undrinkable status of Flint's water supply. He wrote that the governor knew about the lead in Flint's water long ago and did nothing.

"Because of the conduct by Gov. Snyder's administration and his refusal to take responsibility, families will suffer from lead poisoning for the rest of their lives," the release stated. "Children in Flint will be plagued with brain damage and other health problems. The people of Flint deserve more than an apology."

Dave Murray -- a spokesperson for the governor's office -- said in a statement that finger-pointing from candidates not involved in finding solutions for Flint only serve to distract from solving the crisis.

Snyder declared a state of emergency for Genesee County and announced that he asked President Barack Obama to declare a federal emergency in response to the water crisis this week.

On Saturday. Obama granted Snyder's request and will send $5 million in aid to help Flint.
