Wheelchair-Bound Woman Found Dead After House Fire On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a wheelchair-bound woman was found dead following a house fire on Detroit's west side.

The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning at a home on Greenview Street, near the Southfield Freeway and Ford Road.

Firefighters responding to the home found the woman, described as in her 60s, deceased inside. Other circumstances weren't immediately clear.

"There's a female, at this point an unidentified female, inside the location," said Fire Arson Sgt. Mike Russell. "We haven't determined the cause of the fire but we're investigating it as accidental."

Russell said there was no electricity or utilities at the house. Even though firefighters didn't find a space heater in the home, Russell said it appears the woman was using an alternate source of heat to stay warm.

Neighbor Ashley Shaver said she called 911 after waking up to find her house full of smoke. When she realized the fire wasn't coming from her home, she looked outside to see her neighbor's house in flames.

"It is pretty sad," Shaver told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "I just hope that her family knows by now because I haven't seen anyone."

An investigation is ongoing.
