Chad Curtis May Get New Hearing On Sex Crime Sentence

HASTINGS, Mich. (AP) - Former Major League Baseball player Chad Curtis must decide whether he wants to return to court for a new sentence for criminal sexual conduct.

The Michigan Supreme Court sent Curtis' case back to a Barry County judge, in light of a decision last year that broadly affects sentencing procedures statewide.

It's not clear whether Curtis could get a better sentence. He was convicted in 2013 and must serve at least seven years in prison until he's eligible for parole. Young women said they were inappropriately touched by Curtis when they were high school students in western Michigan.

The Grand Rapids Press says Judge Amy McDowell told Curtis on Tuesday that he has 45 days to decide. He says he plans to talk to a lawyer and the prosecutor.
