Pedestrian Fatally Struck By 3 Vehicles On Schoenherr Road; 1 Driver Flees Scene

WARREN (WWJ) - Authorities say a 37-year-old man has died after he was struck by three vehicles while trying to cross a busy Macomb County road, one of which fled the scene.

The accident happened around 6:55 a.m. Thursday on Schoenherr Road at Leonard, between Toepfer and 9 Mile Road in Warren.

Police say Daniel Rook, of Warren, was attempting to cross the road when he was initially struck by a northbound-traveling Kia Sportage. According to police, Rook was dressed in all dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old Clinton Township woman, stopped at the scene and called 911.

Another driver saw that a body was in the roadway, so he stopped his truck on southbound Schoenherr to hold up traffic. As the man was holding traffic on northbound Schoenherr, a PT Cruiser drove around the stopped vehicle into the southbound lanes and ran over Rook, according to police. The PT Cruiser was followed by a Grand Prix, driven by a 24-year-old Warren man, which also struck Rook.

Police said the driver of the PT Cruiser then stopped in the roadway and was rear ended by the Grand Prix. The PT Cruiser driver, who is described as a black female in her late 30s, got out of her car and started yelling at the driver of the Grand Prix, who also stopped, according to police. The woman then got back in her PT Cruiser and fled the scene before officers arrived.

Rook was rushed to St. John Macomb Hospital where he later died.

Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The woman who initially hit Rook and the driver of the Grand Prix were given a Breathalyzer test at the scene, with both results being .00, according to police.

Investigators are now trying to track down the driver who left the scene. She's described as a black female in her late 30s, 5'4" to 5'6" tall with a thin build and hair pulled back in a ponytail. She is driving a red or burgundy PT Cruiser that will have rear-end damage from the crash.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 586-574-4877.

Schoenherr Road was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash scene, but has since reopened.
