Michigan Teen To Receive White House Computer Science Honor

UTICA, Mich. (AP) - A 17-year-old Macomb County girl will be honored by the White House for her efforts in expanding access to computer science education.

Utica Community Schools senior Christina Li will be among nine people from across the country recognized Tuesday in Washington, D.C. as "White House Champions of Change for Computer Science Education."

Li was nominated by Debbie Taylor, assistant director of the engineering school and director of Women in Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, for the weeklong computer science camp she hosted last summer. The camp, called Hello World, taught 30 middle school girls how to code websites, games, apps and robots.

Li doesn't think she'll be able to meet the president, but she's set to go on a tour of the White House after the ceremony.
