Detroit Families: Reset Your Household

By Sharlonda Buckman

With the chaos of education issues surfacing around our children every day, parents are continually challenged to focus their energy on being their child's first teacher. We know that education starts in the home; it begins with how much a child is read to, listens to music, interacts with numbers, letters, art, shapes, and much more. As our education systems are consistently subject to change, the importance of instilling the value of lifelong learning in our children remains crucial to raising successful kids.

This is a time to rebuild the foundation at home, to reset your household; not only with academics and the value of learning but with all your family's core values, ethics, and most importantly love. Make time to teach your children how to always respect others, speak with kindness, accept their classmates' differences, and be confident. Provide your little ones with examples around the importance of integrity, accountability, and leadership.

As issues rise, are you sheltering your children away from the problems or breaking down the content to their understanding and having solution-oriented conversations with them. Sometimes our kids are more profound and receptive in times of concern than we are. We must communicate with them and give them extra affection around difficult issues rather than close the blinds and tell them to go sleep. Most importantly, we must show are kids love in multiple ways: tell them, hug them, listen to them, and have fun with them.
