UP Casino Hotel Closed While It Deals With Legionella Bacteria

WATERSMEET, Mich. (AP) — The hotel at an Upper Peninsula Indian casino remains closed after the discovery of the bacteria that cause Legionnaires' disease.

The hotel is at the Lac Vieux Desert Resort and Casino in Watersmeet in the western Upper Peninsula near the Wisconsin border. The casino and restaurant are open.

In a statement, the hotel says it won't reopen until the "remediation effort is complete." WLUC-TV reports that one guest became sick.

Legionnaires' is a type of pneumonia. The bacteria live in the environment and thrive in warm water. People can get sick if they inhale mist or vapor from contaminated water systems, hot tubs and cooling systems.

The casino is operated by the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
