Snow Falls On Metro Detroit Ahead Of Deep Freeze

DETROIT (WWJ) - Metro Detroit is getting something we haven't seen much of all winter: Snow.

CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said a weather system moving over the region will bring snow showers throughout the day Tuesday, amounting to several inches of accumulation in some areas.

"It will be a cold day, a typical winter day here in southeast Michigan," he said. "Temperatures will only reach about 34 degrees."

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, currently in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday, for Livingston, Macomb, Oakland and St Clair counties. Forecasters say bands of snow showers will continue to spiral off of Lake Huron and sweep southwestward, leaving behind three to six inches of snow. During this time, periods of heavy snowfall can cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility, and use caution while driving.

Although the snow will continue throughout the day, metro Detroiters should only expect to see an inch or two on the ground, according to AccuWeather. Areas closer to the Thumb will see up to six inches.

The snow led to hazardous road conditions in parts of Michigan earlier in the day, with crashes reported in the Ann Arbor, Flint and Saginaw areas as well as southwestern Michigan.

Authorities in Washtenaw County responded Tuesday to several crashes as heavy, wet snow fell. Crashes were reported in Genesee and Saginaw counties.

In southwestern Michigan's Cass County, the sheriff's department says a two-vehicle crash Monday night amid wintry conditions sent four people to the hospital with injuries.

Tuesday's snow comes ahead of a harder hit of winter weather expected this weekend, according to Madaus, when a deep freeze settles over Metro Detroit. Although we'll see some sunshine, temperatures will drop to around 10 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:
