Temperatures Hover Around Single Digits Through Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's going to be a very cold weekend -- the coldest of the year so far.

"It's just a bitter cold weekend in metro Detroit," said CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus. "Temperatures will be in the teens Saturday across southeast Michigan, and much colder as you get away from the city. Some cities won't even climb out of the single digits."

Conditions will be nearly identical on Sunday.

"On Valentine's Day, we're looking at a high of 19 degrees and might even see some snow," said Madaus.

The very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. This could result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia if precautions aren't taken. If you must venture outdoors, make sure to wear a hat and gloves.

The extremely cold temperatures can also wreak havoc on vehicle functionality. AAA offers the following tips to help motorist keep their vehicles road-ready:

• Have battery and charging system tested to ensure they are fully charged and in good condition.
• Keep the gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
• Use windshield washer fluid with a winter solvent that won't freeze.
• Make sure the engine coolant provides anti-freeze protection down to the lowest temperatures you are likely to encounter; -30oF/-34oC is a good guideline.
• Park vehicles in a garage. If you have no garage, put a tarp over the hood or park protected from prevailing winds. To keep doors from freezing shut, place a plastic trash bag between the door or window glass and the frame.
• Always travel with a cell phone and car charger.
• If you become stranded, it is best to stay with the vehicle.  If the engine can be started, run it only long enough to keep warm. Make sure the exhaust pipe is snow-free.
