Man Who Turned Himself In Charged For Alleged Attempted Abductions

BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- A man who turned himself in for several abduction attempts last week faced charges on Sunday.

David Robin Cayton, 54, of Pontiac was charged with one count of assault and battery and one count of disorderly obscene conduct and was issued a $5,000 or 10 percent conditional bond.

According to police, Cayton approached at least four women within a 15 minute timeframe on Thursday afternoon at shopping center on the corner of Square Lake Road and Woodward Avenue and tried to lure them back to his van with the offer of money.

The first incident happened around 1:30 p.m., when he allegedly approached a woman who was sitting in her vehicle parked near the Rite Aid pharmacy. Police say Cayton offered money to the woman, but made no physical contact. She refused and he walked away.

Moments later, at 1:32 p.m., police say he approached another woman who was shopping inside a store and again offered her money. Cayton made no physical contact with the woman, who refused his advances.

Five minutes later, at 1:37 p.m., Cayton allegedly approached a 20-year-old woman who was parking her vehicle outside of a Qdoba restaurant. The woman told police he forced her door open and asked if she wanted to make $100,000. When she declined, he became "more aggressive" and attempted to forcibly remove the woman from the vehicle, according to police. The woman was able to resist and he ran away, getting into a red panel van.

The woman went inside Qdoba and was being assisted by management when Cayton entered the restaurant around 1:45 p.m. and approached another female who was waiting in line. He allegedly tried to lure that woman out of the restaurant, no physical contact was made, but she refused. He then fled the area in the red van.

Detective Sergeant James Gallagher said media coverage helped convince Cayton to turn himself in.

Investigators are still looking for anyone else who may have been approached by the suspect.
