Man's Body Found In West Side Home Gutted By Fire

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say firefighters found a body in a home on Detroit's west side that was gutted by a fire overnight.

Fire crews were called early Tuesday to a home on Burnette Street, in a neighborhood near Joy Road and Livernois Avenue, and arrived to find flames shooting through the windows.

After extinguishing the blaze, crews were searching the home when they discovered a man's body. A cause of death wasn't immediately clear, but authorities believe he died in the fire.

Firefighters also found a dog inside the home. He appeared to be breathing OK and was taken back to a fire house, according to reports.

Neighbors tell WWJ's Charlie Langton that the man, who went by the nickname "TJ," was in his 30s and lived alone in the home. James Mack, who lives next door, said he knew the man by "Shorty."

"He was a good neighbor, you know, he stayed to himself, you know, he had a few lady friends come over or whatever but other than that, he was a good neighbor," said Mack.

Arson investigators were called to the scene, although authorities say nothing about the fire appears to be suspicious.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
