Man Faces 6 Murder Counts In Kalamazoo-Area Shooting Rampage, Admits To Killings

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A Kalamazoo Township man has been charged with six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder in a series of random shootings in western Michigan.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting filed the charges Monday against 45-year-old Jason Dalton in connection with the crimes over the weekend.

Speaking to a judge during a probable cause hearing Monday, a police detective said Dalton waived his Miranda rights after his arrest, early Sunday morning, and admitted that he "took people's lives" Saturday night,

Police said the rampage began about 6 p.m. Saturday outside an apartment complex, where a woman was seriously wounded. A little more than four hours later, a father and son were fatally shot while looking at vehicles at a car dealership.

Fifteen minutes after that, five people were shot in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Lt. Dale Hinz of Michigan State Police Dalton was cooperative and had been talking about the incidents.

"People are asking, you know, what kind of an animal does this? What can we expect from an individual like this? But he's not a remarkable man at all," Hintz said. "There's nothing about him that gives you pause or takes you aback."

Hinz believes that Dalton understands the severity of the situation.

"He does, yes he does. There are no concerns, at least in my mind, that he doesn't understand the situation, and we'll be working through that in the next several days," said Hinz.

Working as an Uber driver, it appears Dalton methodically kept up his stops throughout the night of the rampage, picking up people and dropping them off while shooting others he encountered on the route.

The ride-sharing company has confirmed to CNN that Dalton had passed a background check.

As part of the Kalamazoo investigation, federal agents seized many long guns and handguns Dalton's home.  The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting state and local police.  ATF spokesman Donald Dawkins says there's no indication that Dalton was prohibited from possessing guns.

Dalton was ordered held without bond.
