Passenger Struck By Vehicle After Exiting SMART Bus

WARREN (WWJ) - Police say a 60-year-old Detroit man who was struck by a vehicle after exiting a SMART bus in Warren is in critical condition.

The accident happened around 9:10 a.m. Saturday on northbound Van Dyke Avenue just south of 14 Mile Road.

Police say the man had exited the bus and was walking in front of the bus when a car driven by a 49-year-old Madison Heights woman hit him.

"By crossing in front of the bus, the vehicle traveling northbound in the center lane never seen the pedestrian until he walked right in front of her vehicle," Warren Police Lt. Courtland Larry told WWJ's Laura Bonnell. "She never had a chance to even stop for the pedestrian."

The man was rushed to an area hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.

The woman was uninjured. She stayed at the scene and was questioned by police. Larry said she was released without being ticketed.

"It's an unfortunate accident," said Larry. "Normally, you would go to exit the bus and you stay on that side of the road, not cross in front of the bus because the vehicles are not required to stop."

Van Dyke Avenue was closed for about an hour as police investigate the crash scene, but has since reopened.
