2 Survivors Of Kalamazoo Shootings Upgraded To Fair Condition

KALAMAZOO (WWJ/AP) - Officials say two people who survived a mass shooting in southwestern Michigan have been upgraded to fair condition.

Tiana Carruthers and 14-year-old Abigail Kopf remained in a Kalamazoo hospital on Tuesday.

Carruthers, 25, was shot outside an apartment complex on Feb. 20 — the first in a series of victims that day. Abigail was shot in a Cracker Barrel restaurant parking lot.

Carruthers, who was shot multiple times, underwent surgery on Sunday. Abigail, who was originally thought to have died at the scene of the attack, was removed from a ventilator on Sunday and, according to her mother, has since been breathing on her own.

Six people were killed in the rampage – four at the restaurant, near I-94, and two at a car dealership.

Funerals and memorial services were held over the weekend. The last was Sunday at a Battle Creek church to honor Mary Jo Nye, a retired teacher.

Meantime, the alleged shooter, Uber driver Jason Dalton, is charged with six counts of murder. A judge denied bail for the 45-year-old former insurance adjuster, who Kalamazoo police Det. Cory Ghiringhelli told the court had admitted to investigators "that he took people's lives."

Dalton did not know his victims, according to investigators, who believe they were chosen at random. He faces mandatory life in prison if convicted.

No motive for the shootings has been revealed.
