Woman Whose Baby Died In Garage Convicted Of Murder

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (WWJ/AP) — A young Detroit-area woman whose newborn baby was left to die in a cold garage has been convicted of murder.

A jury in Macomb County deliberated for less than two hours Friday before announcing a verdict against 25-year-old Angela Alexie, who faces life in prison with no parole.

Investigators said Alexie gave birth in a garage in Eastpointe shortly before Christmas in 2014. The boy died in the garage, and his body was discovered at a recycling center.

Prosecutor Bill Cataldo told jurors that Alexie "chose the cowardly way" of getting rid of the child.

"No food, no water, no clothing, no warmth, no blanket, no protection against the elements — this child had no chance," Cataldo has said. "There are a ton of options she could have used. That child was 15 feet from a door that would have led that child to warmth."

Defense attorney Steve Kaplan said involuntary manslaughter was more appropriate, but the jury disagreed.

"My client is responsible for he child's death, but we do not believe that she intended to physically harm the child or cause seriously great bodily harm," Kaplan has said. "We think that the appropriate charges are involuntary man slaughter and second-degree child abuse."

Kaplan says Alexie was a high school dropout who had lost custody of three children. She'll be sentenced April 19.
