Metro Detroit Breaks 138-Year-Old Weather Record Amid Spring 'Heat Wave'

DETROIT (WWJ) – A number of weather records were broken Wednesday across Michigan.

In Detroit, the high temperature Wednesday hit 71 degrees, breaking the old record of 68 set in 1878. A record high of 72 was set in Flint as well, breaking the record of 67 set back in 2000.

Elsewhere across the state, record highs were broken in Traverse City -- 60 degrees, breaking the 2000 record of 58 -- and in Pellston -- 57 degrees, breaking the 2000 record of 56. Records were also tied in Houghton Lake -- 58 degrees, set in 2000 -- and in Muskegon -- 60 degrees, set in 2002.

It will be hard for records to be broken again on Thursday, with cloudy skies and rain in the forecast throughout the day. The record high temperature for March 10 in Detroit is currently 70 degrees, set back in 1925.

Thursday -- Rain early...then remaining cloudy with showers in the afternoon. High 60F. Low near 51F.

Friday -- A few passing clouds, otherwise generally sunny. High 54F. Low 37F.

Saturday -- Intervals of clouds and sunshine. Chance of showers overnight. High 56F. Low 37F.

Sunday -- Showers early becoming a steady light rain later in the day. High 57F. Low 43F.

Monday -- Cloudy with occasional rain showers. Thunder possible. High 67F. Low 52F.
