Detroit-Windsor Tunnel To Get New Concrete Ceiling
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is getting a new concrete ceiling, leading to overnight closures starting in August.
Neal Belitsky, the tunnel company's president, says behind-the-scenes work will begin in May. He says the work is "purely preventive" and that the tunnel's current ceiling is fine, but that it's the original concrete slab that was installed in the 1920s. The tunnel opened in 1930.
"It's just a normal rehab project that you get in this type of tunnel," Belitsky told The Detroit Free Press. "We want to plant the seed in the traveling public's mind so they can prepare."
The cost of the project is not yet clear, but officials expect it to be completed in December. Belitsky said bid packages will go out next week.
The work is a continuation of more than $50 million in investments the tunnel company says it has made to the tunnel since 1998.
