Wrong-Way Driver Killed In Overnight Crash On I-94

HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Police say a deadly crash that shut down a portion of I-94 for hours was caused by a driver traveling the wrong way.

The accident happened just before 12 a.m. Friday on eastbound I-94 at Allard Avenue in Harper Woods.

Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said a woman in a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-94 when she struck another vehicle that was traveling in the correct direction.

The woman was taken to St. John Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not yet been released.

No other injuries were reported.

"We're unable at this time to determine if alcohol or any other impairments to their driving were factors in the crash," said Shaw. "So, right now we are waiting for autopsy results and also for our crash investigation unit to do their final paperwork before we can determine the actual cause."

The freeway was closed for about three hours, but has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
