Police Seek Witnesses To Incident On I-94 That Left Passenger 'Brain-Dead'

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - Police are looking for witnesses to a suspicious incident on I-94 in St. Clair Shores that left a man "brain-dead."

The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. Friday on eastbound I-94 just east of the I-696 interchange, and had the freeway shut down for hours.

Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to the scene in reference to a traffic crash. The driver told troopers that road debris went through the car's windshield and hurt the passenger, according to police.

Lieutenant Mike Shaw said that information just didn't add up with evidence at scene. He said the driver also made statements that the pair had just bought heroin in Detroit.

The passenger was rushed to a local hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He was last listed in critical condition and police say he might be brain-dead. His name has not yet been released.

The driver was briefly detained after the incident but has since been released from police custody.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who was in the area and might have heard or seen anything is urged to contact state police at 313-237-2450 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
