Death Of Michigan Marine Recruit At Boot Camp Under Investigation

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (WWJ/AP) - It could be several weeks before we get more details surrounding the death of a Michigan Marine recruit at a South Carolina boot camp.

Marine Capt. Greg Carroll said that Raheel Siddiqui of Taylor, Michigan, died Friday at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island.

Carroll said the recruit arrived on March 7, went through processing and was undergoing his fourth day of basic training on the day he died.

Carroll would not comment on possible circumstances of the death. He said an investigation, now underway by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, could take up to 20 days.

Carroll explained why not many more details are being released.

"In order to ensure, you know, the sanctity of the investigation, and to ensure that information that's provided is accurate, and due to respect for the family and also him in his time when he was at boot camp," Carrol told WWJ Newsradio 950's Zahra Huber,

"But our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends," he added, "and the Marine Corps will be continually working with the family during this trying time."

Each year about 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island for 12 weeks of training.

A handful of recruits have died at Parris Island over the years. In 2005, a 19-year-old recruit drowned after struggling to pass a combat water survival test. A year later, another recruit died after a physical fitness test.

The Associated Press left messages with a Marines spokesmen seeking additional comment.
