Grief Counselors On Hand After Death Of Teen In ATV Accident

HOWELL (WWJ) - Students and teachers at Highlander Way Middle School in Howell are grieving over the loss of one of their eighth graders.

Thirteen-year-old Matthew Longthorne died Saturday after an ATV accident.

Spokesperson for Howell Public Schools, Tom Gould, says counselors will be in place for students at Highlander Way Middle School where Longthorne attended.

"A counselor will follow Matthew's schedule for the day so that counselor will be in each of his classes in case a student who had a class with him needs support," said Gould.

Counselors will also be available throughout the district.

"If we need an additional counselor or two at Highlander Way as students grieve the loss - we'll make sure that they are available so our students are supported."

No new details coming from authorities on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

On the Howell Public Schools website the school offered their condolences:

The Highlander Way Middle School administration and staff will be taking steps to assist and support students as they grieve the loss of their classmate. Counselors are available for any student who is in need of support during this difficult time. If you think your child needs additional counseling support, please do not hesitate to contact the Highlander Way Middle School Guidance Office at 517-548-6259.

No word yet about funeral arrangements for the boy.
