Michigan Woman Gets Probation For Neglect After 120 Animals Confiscated

ALPENA, Mich. (AP) - A woman who pleaded guilty in an animal neglect case that involved more than 120 animals confiscated from a farm in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula could avoid time behind bars.

The Alpena News reports Deborah Lewandowski was sentenced Monday to five years of probation that includes not owning or possessing animals. If she complies, she won't have to spend six months in jail.

Judge Michael Mack said Lewandowski has a mental illness and needs to continue therapy.

Lewandowski told the court she had become bogged down with work and finances. She says she's undergoing therapy.

Lewandowski earlier admitted mistreatment of the animals at her farm in Alpena County's Green Township.

Witnesses earlier testified the animals were living in poor conditions. Animals involved included horses, pigs, dogs and rabbits.
