Man Gets At Least 30 Years For Killing Woman He Met On 'Backpage' Date

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 27-year-old Oakland County man will serve at least 30 years in prison for the slaying of a woman contacted through a website listing personal ads.

The Detroit Free Press reports Jerome Moore of Oak Park pleaded guilty earlier this month to second-degree murder and was sentenced Wednesday to 30-45 years in prison. He initially was charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors say Moore made contact Aug. 15 with 23-year-old Cynthia Worthy on Backpage.com, a classifieds website that include people looking for sex — often for pay.

Worthy's sister reported her missing after she never returned home from her date, and her body was found two days later in a Detroit alley. She had been stabbed.

This isn't the first time Backpage.com has been linked to a murder case. In April, 2014, a Sterling Heights man was sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted in the deaths of four young women whom he met on the website. Their bodies were all found in car trunks in Detroit.

Following her death, Worthy's father told reporters his daughter wanted to give up escort work and had recently enrolled in college.
