Ex-University Of Michigan Professor Gets 10 Years Prison On Child Sex Charges In Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WWJ/AP) - A former University of Michigan professor who pleaded guilty to traveling to South Florida to have sex with a 14-year-old boy has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Fifty-one-year-old James Cavalcoli, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was sentenced Wednesday, The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Cavalcoli pleaded guilty in January to attempting to coerce or entice a minor to engage in sexual activity and traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Authorities said Cavalcoli was arrested Aug. 7 when arrived at a prearranged meeting with an undercover Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent, whom he believed to be the boy's father. Communications with the agent went on for roughly 18 months, according to reports.

Cavalcoli eventually admitted his guilt, telling the judge he knew what he was doing when he arranged a "real-time sexual experience" with the underage boy.

At the time, officials say Calvalcoli was employed as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan. According to the newspaper, Cavalcoli was in Tampa for business when he rented a car and drove about 250 miles to a spa resort for the illicit meeting.
