Man Set To Go On Trial In Police Sergeant's Fatal Crash

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - A man charged with driving on a suspended license causing the death of a Hamburg Township police sergeant in Livingston County northwest of Detroit is scheduled to go on trial.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the trial of 55-year-old Steven Mark Kelty of Oceola Township is set to begin Monday. Kelty also is charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana causing the death.

Sgt. James Sanderson was killed in a traffic crash in Genoa Township on Sept. 26, 2014. Witnesses said Sanderson was thrown from his motorcycle in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sanderson had been a member of the police department since 1994.

The trial is being heard before Circuit Judge Miriam Cavanaugh in Howell.
