Mix Of Sewage, Storm Water Discharged Into Flint River

FLINT (WWJ/AP) - Officials say a mixture of sewage and storm water was discharged into the Flint River this week due to excessive wet weather.

The city's Utilities Department says in a statement that the release at Flint's water pollution control facility took place Monday evening. State environmental officials and Genesee County health officials have been notified, according to The Flint Journal.

The amount of the discharge wasn't immediately reported.

The statement says the wet weather exceeded the plant's ability to treat and convey sewage into the plant. A retention and treatment basin at the wastewater treatment discharges into the river when its capacity and the plant's treatment capacity are exceeded.

The Genesee County Health Department is advising people not to come in contact with the Flint River downstream from the discharge.
