Traffic Alert: Southbound I-275 Expected To Close In Early May

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Get ready drivers, you only have about a month left before major construction work begins on I-275 in northern Wayne and southern Oakland counties.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says southbound I-275 is expected to close in early May. The exact closure date isn't yet known.

When southbound I-275 closes, eastbound I-96 traffic will remain on eastbound I-696 to detour to southbound M-39 (Southfield Freeway) to westbound I-96, then southbound I-275.

Once southbound I-275 work is completed, which is expected to take a couple of months, it will reopen and northbound I-275 will close. That schedule will be announced ahead of time and shared on the I-275 project website: revive275.com. Work on northbound I-275 is expected to take until September.

Currently, eastbound 7 Mile Road is closed over I-275, with traffic detoured to 6 Mile Road. Weekends and weeknight work will result in two lanes closed in each direction on I-275, including shoulder closures, to begin preparing the road surface for upcoming work and later lane closures.

When eastbound 7 Mile Road reopens in about a week, then westbound 7 Mile Road will be closed over I-275 for approximately one week. Traffic will be detoured northbound to 8 Mile Road.

In addition to these closures, Meadowbrook Road is closed for approximately a week and a half, with traffic detoured at 12 Mile Road and at Grand River Avenue.

When Meadowbrook Road reopens, Haggerty Road will be closed over I-96/I-696/I-275 (three bridges) from approximately April 23 through May 1, with posted detours.

PROJECT DETAILS:

The contract of this $75 million investment has just been awarded to Toebe Construction. Work, as of April 6, includes replacing 88 lanes miles of concrete pavement on I-275 from north of Five Mile Road to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange, including all the ramps on "Mile" roads and at the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange. The project also includes shoulder work on I-275, concrete repairs on I-696, repairs on 16 bridges, drainage improvements, and intelligent transportation systems work.

A public meeting to share information on the project is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Davenport University, located at 19499 Victor Parkway in Livonia.
