Man Shot By Livonia Police During Traffic Stop Held On $1 Million Bond

LIVONIA (WWJ/AP) - A 23-year-old man who was shot by police during a traffic stop in Livonia has been charged with felonious assault, resisting and obstructing, and weapons offenses.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Joseph Carlton was arraigned Wednesday following his release from a hospital. He was ordered held on a $1 million cash bond.

The charges stem from a situation that unfolded around 2 a.m. Saturday, when police responded to the area of Lyndon and Farmington Road on a report of an erratic driver. One officer initiated a traffic stop while a second police officer in a separate car was there as back up.

As the first officer approached Carlton's vehicle, it's alleged that Carlton and pointed a rifle outside the driver's side window at the officer.

"Carlton pointed his weapon at the first officer and both officers fearing for their safety fired their weapons at him," prosecutors said in a statement. "After firing their weapons, the officers ordered the defendant out of the car."

Carlton was shot twice. He was placed under arrest and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Carlton, of Livonia, is also charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, second offense, and driving on a suspended license. He's due back in court for a probable cause hearing on April 21 and a preliminary exam on April 28.
