WATERFORD (WWJ) -- Police say that a homeowner in Waterford caught a man stealing a package off of his front porch thanks to some help from his home surveillance system.

The man reported that a stranger had stolen a UPS package from his front porch on the 6000 Block of Williams Lake Rd.

The suspect was seen on the home surveillance camera getting out of his vehicle to look at a vehicle that was for sale in the front yard. The suspect was then seen running to the front porch and taking the package that had just been delivered before he drove away.

Within 1 to 2 hours of the home surveillance being shown on social media, the suspect was identified as Timothy Charles Dooley, 33, of Walled Lake. Investigators made contact with Dooley, who turned himself in.

Dooley admitted to investigators that he stole the package -- which had a value of $25.

When asked why he committed the theft, Dooley told police that he made the decision to steal the package while looking at the vehicle that was for sale in the front yard.

Dooley pleaded guilty to one count of larceny at his arraignment on Wednesday and is due back in court for sentencing on May 2.

He was given a $5,000 personal bond.
