Advocates To Rally At State Capitol In Support Of Child Abuse Prevention

LANSING (AP) — Child advocates plan to rally on the state Capitol steps to raise awareness and promote the need for services in an event marking Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The Children's Trust Fund, part of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, is holding a Prevention Awareness Day Rally Tuesday morning. Organizers say the eighth annual event aims to highlight the problem of child abuse or neglect, and push for prevention programs.

The event's theme is "The Power of One." Officials urge residents to do one small or large act to help protect children.

Participants also will plant a "pinwheel garden." The pinwheel is the national symbol for child abuse prevention.

Scheduled speakers include Detroit Medical Center Pediatric Specialist Dr. Dena Nazer and Health and Human Services Director Nick Lyon.
