Man Killed In Car V. Semi Truck Crash At Garfield And 19 Mile Rd.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police and emergency crews remain on the scene of a fatal accident involving two vehicles in Clinton Township.

Clinton Twp. police say an elderly man in his 90s was traveling westbound on 19 Mile Road, just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, when he rolled through a red light at the Garfield Rd. intersection.

That's when his car collided with a semi truck headed northbound on Garfield.

"He struck the semi right in the middle," said Captain Richard Maierle. "He went underneath the semi, according to what I was told by officers at the scene."

The driver of the car was killed instantly and pronounced dead at the scene, Maierle said. The truck driver was not hurt.

At noon, southbound Garfield was closed at 19 Mile for a crash investigation and was expected to remain closed for another couple of hours.

Maierle said it was not clear if the victim might have experienced a medical emergency before the crash. An autopsy will be conducted by the Macomb County Medical Examiner.

The man's name was not immediately released.
