Efforts To Help Flint Amid Water Crisis Get $520,000 Boost
FLINT (AP) - The Community Foundation of Greater Flint is distributing more than $520,000 to help deal with Flint's crisis with lead-tainted water.
The funding announced this week goes to Edible Flint, the Fair Food Network, the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department and the Hurley Foundation. Work planned with the grants includes improving access to health care and nutritious foods.
A $167,000 grant to the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department, for example, will help expand the "Meet Up, Eat Up" summer meal program and establish year-round sites for weekend meals.
Nutritious food can limit the effects of lead exposure. If consumed, lead can cause developmental delays and learning disabilities.
The grants are from the Flint Child Health and Development Fund and the Healthy Food and Safe Water Fund.
