Residents Rescued From Burning Home In Detroit; Careless Smoking Might Have Sparked Fire

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say careless smoking might be to blame for a fire that trapped a family inside their home on Detroit's west side.

The fire took off early Thursday morning at a home on West Outer Drive, just east of the Lodge Freeway and north of 6 Mile Road.

Audrey Kelly-Smiles said three of her relatives were trapped inside the home when firefighters arrived.

"My sister, uncle and cousin were all in the home," she told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "I  have no idea what happened."

Her uncle was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. The other two residents were treated at the scene.

Acting Fire Chief Dan Watson said a cause of the fire is still being determined, but they have a theory of what happened.

"It's possible it's a careless smoker but that can't be confirmed or denied," he said.

An investigation is ongoing.
