Long Prison Term For Man Who Hatched Sex Crime Behind Bars
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A man accused of trying to arrange sex with a mentally disabled teen when he was in a state prison has been sentenced to 33 years in federal prison.
Shane Scott of Coldwater was arrested by federal authorities just before his release from a prison in Ionia in 2015. Investigators say he sent many detailed letters to the teen's mother while behind bars.
The mother was prosecuted in state court.
Federal Judge Paul Maloney in Kalamazoo sentenced Scott on Tuesday, calling the crime "shocking." U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles praised Corrections Department staff for screening Scott's mail.
