The Snack Attack: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With Michigan Tequila

Today is Cinco de Mayo! Time for a fiesta, my friends. And what better way to celebrate the day than with a bottle of tequila?

Tequila is a fine Mexican spirit most often associated with drinking your face off. You know what they say: One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, FLOOR!

Michigan is a world away from Mexico, but that doesn't mean businesses in the state don't have their hands in the tequila mix. So pass up that bottle of Patron this year and put a Michigan spin on your Cinco de Mayo celebrations!

Tequila Cabresto -- Detroit
Known as having the heart of Mexico and the soul of Detroit.

• Ultra Silver: Exceptionally smooth, the taste confirms its scent of sweetness and herbal notes with the intensity of baked agave, leaving a smooth harmonious balance. Cabresto Ultra Silver Tequila is transparent with an exquisite brilliance of silvery hues and a full body taste. Best enjoyed as a sipping tequila or in a margarita.

• Reposado: Aged in charred White Oak barrels for over six months, Cabresto Resposado Tequila elicits hints of honey and herbs, and has a slightly smoky finish. Luminous with an exquisite brilliance of golden hues, Cabresto Reposado Tequila is best experienced in a snifter or on the rocks and will be enjoyed by aficionados of small-batch burbon, single malt Scotch or fine cognac.

Blue Nectar Tequila by Blue Nectar Spirits -- Southfield
No faux-Spanish name. No celebrity endorsement. Just a father and son with a passion for tequila.

• Silver: Triple-distilled. Agave-forward with a clean and crisp finish. Crystal clear, vibrant tequila. A quick, smooth warming of the palate—without the burn—which culminates in a nice, clean finish. Great for sipping with a simple squeeze of lime and as a cocktail base.

• Reposado Extra Blend: Double-distilled. Aged six to eight months in charred North American oak barrels and blended with three-year extra añejo. Rich flavor with hints of oak, smoke and vanilla. Beautiful straw-colored tequila imbued with deep, oak aromas mingled with cooked agave. An initially hot mouthfeel that cools quickly to reveal a long warm, bittersweet finish.

• Reposado Special Craft: Double-distilled. Aged six to eight months in charred North American oak barrels and infused with essential oils and a hint of agave nectar. Complex flavor with subtle notes of vanilla, nutmeg and other spices. Rich golden sipping tequila product with notes similar to a fine cognac. Layered, balanced notes of vanilla, nutmeg, and other spices with a silky, warm mouthfeel. As the flavor begins to settle, there is a sweet hint and a lingering agave finish.

• Añejo Founder's Blend: Double-distilled. Aged for one to two years in charred American oak barrels and blended with extra añejo, including a limited production five year old extra añejo. Velvety texture with layers of flavor. Initial palate of agave warms to velvety buttered toffee, vanilla, smoke and oak notes and finishes medium dry.

Dos Jaimes Mezcal Joven by Two James Spirits -- Detroit
This isn't exactly a tequila, but it's close. See, all tequila is technically mezcal but there's a basic difference -- under law, tequila has to be made from the blue agave plan while mezcal, on the other hand, can be made with more than 30 varieties of the agave plant. The distillation process is also different and both are produced in different regions of Mexico. So, separate but equal.

Distilled in Oaxaca, Mexico (NOM-0120X) and bottled under the Dos Jaimes name, the Mezcal is made from the espadín, wild tepeztate and tobalá agave plants. Made from 100% agave in compliance with the laws and regulations of the Mexican government.
