The Snack Attack: Krispy Kreme Ups Their Grocery Game With Glazed Orange Cake Doughnuts [TASTE TEST]

I love me some Krispy Kreme. There's just something about their freshly baked doughnuts that makes them a step above anyone else. The shop is always inventing new flavor combinations and their latest creation is sure to make your tummy smile -- a Glazed Orange Cake Doughnut.

It's the perfect breakfast combination: An orange doughnut to go with your glass of orange juice.

But this doughnut comes with a bit of a catch. Unless you live near the only two shops in the Detroit-area, in Allen Park and Troy, you're stuck buying Krispy Kreme doughnuts from a local convenience or grocery store. This time around, the Orange Cake Doughnut is ONLY being sold at participating grocery, mass merchants and convenience stores -- so everyone wins!

Available for a limited time, you can get the full-size doughnuts by the half-dozen, or Krispy Juniors in a resealable package (the bag I got had 14 mini-doughnuts).

Review: Krispy Kreme Glazed Orange Cake Doughnut

Appearance: These doughnuts aren't as orange as I was expecting them to look. The cake itself has an orange tint but there's so much glaze, it mutes the color a little bit.

Aroma: Smells like a sweet, orange pastry. The orange scent isn't overwhelming but is definitely noticeable.

Taste: Mmmmm! These doughnuts are delightfully sweet, and the orange flavoring is just subtle enough it tastes natural. The glaze has a slight crispness to it and the doughnut itself is light and airy, which is hard to pull off with a cake doughnut. It's just the right amount of sweetness and orange.

Pros: For being sold at a grocery store, these doughnuts tasted like they were fresh from the bakery!

Cons: The orange flavoring might not be strong enough for everyone. One of my snacking partners in crime said he could barely taste any orange in his doughnut.

Rating: 7 out of 10
