Mad Max Embarrasses Tigers; Proves Not Re-Signing Him Was A Catastrophic Mistake

By Tom Millikan

Hindsight is 20/20, but the proof was in the pudding last night. Max Scherzer proved why he should still be a Detroit Tiger. He was dominant with 20 strikeouts against his former team. Karma anybody?

The Tigers let pettiness get in the way of resigning a great pitcher.

All Mad Max wanted from the Tigers was fair market value. But the Tigers wouldn't give it to him because they wouldn't pay Scherzer more than Justin Verlander. Egos and pettiness got in the way of re-signing a great pitcher.

The problem is the Tigers never treated Scherzer like a great. He was a #2 in their mind. Nobody could be better than the great JV. But Scherzer was just as good and all he wanted was the 2015 going rate for pitchers.

The Tigers didn't bite, saying we can't pay everybody. Then they turn around and paid more money to Jordan Zimmermann and Justin Upton. They paid more for two good players vs. keeping a great player. That's a no no.

Mike Ilitch is a great owner. He revived Tiger baseball. He wants to win more than any of us. But the one reason he may never win is because he got cheap and petty when it cost him most.
