Police: Man Found Dead On Detroit's West Side Was Shot At Point-Blank Range

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are trying to solve a murder in a west side neighborhood after a man was found fatally shot in the middle of a road.

The situation unfolded around 3:30 a.m. Friday on Brace Street near Joy Road, just west of the Southfield Freeway.

Police arrived to find a man in his 20s with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead at the scene.

According to investigators, the man appears to have been shot at point-blank range. He had at least four gunshot wounds.

Police are now searching for the gunman, but were not able to provide a description.

The shooting rattled an otherwise peaceful neighborhood. Keisha Carter was startled as gunfire rang through the silence of the night.

"I heard about four of five [shots], and then the next thing about 15 or 20 minutes later you see the lights blaring, and I knew it was really really close and I'm like 'Oh my God!,'" Carter told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "It kind of took me back by surprise. And then I look outside and there's a body."

Bertrena Fraser had a similar experience.

"I woke up and saw the news saying on Brace Street near Joy Road and I thought to myself 'This is where I live at,' so I came and looked out the door and there was a body in the street," she said.

Greg Malone said the shooting didn't scare him but he thinks the level of violence in the community is "ridiculous."

"I mean, there's crime happening everywhere and it needs to stop," he said. "That's a young man right there, I mean, it's senseless."

Tony Zarosly was also in disbelief.

"This used to be a nice neighborhood, no trouble, no nothing. Now, there's a shooting almost every night, people yelling late at night, all that stuff," he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
