Sunday Is Flower Day At Detroit's Eastern Market: Don't Forget A Wagon!
DETROIT (WWJ) - The most spectacular flower event in Michigan is returning to Detroit's Eastern Market.
The Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association and Eastern Market Corporation are partnering once again to host the 50th Annual Flower Day on Sunday, May 15, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Hundreds of flower, plant and tree growers from Michigan, Ohio and Canada will fill Eastern Market with over a million of the highest quality annuals, perennials, foliage, shrubbery, trees, exotics, tropical plants, flats, hanging baskets and combination pots for purchase.
Flower Day draws over 150,000 green thumbs, flower aficionados, photographers and more to Eastern Market each year, creating the largest event of its kind in Michigan.
Don't forget to bring a wagon!

The History of Flower Day
In the 1960's southeastern Michigan had the largest production of bedding plants in the United States. Unfortunately, two-thirds of the crop was sold out of state. In 1966, a group of 20 flower growers in the metropolitan Detroit area formed the Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association (MDFGA) to promote awareness and local sales. The first Flower Day was held at the Michigan State Fairgrounds and featured displays, not sales, by local growers. In 1967, after the success of the event at the fairgrounds, MDFGA moved its event to Eastern Market, where growers could sell as well as display their products.
