Detroit Summer Youth Jobs Effort Gets $2M In Federal Funding

DETROIT (AP) — Officials say a Detroit summer job program for youth and young adults is getting a $2 million federal grant.

The Obama administration and Mayor Mike Duggan announced Monday the U.S. Labor Department grant will go to Grow Detroit's Young Talent employment initiative. The money aims to boost the second-year program.

Duggan's office says roughly 200 employers have committed so far to employ residents between 14 and 24. The grant will help meet the city's goal of offering 8,000 summer work opportunities.

The grant is part of $21 million going to 11 communities nationwide.

Both Detroit and Flint also have been named as two of the White House's Summer Impact Hubs. Each city gets a "Federal Summer Ambassador" to work with local officials on boosting jobs, reducing violence and other efforts.
