Prosecution Looking Into Potential 2nd Victim In Mateen Cleaves Sex Case
FLINT (WWJ/AP) — Genesee County Special Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey says they are investigating a second potential victim in the sex assault case against former Michigan State University basketball player Mateen Cleaves.
A hearing is planned next month to determine whether the 38-year-old Cleaves will stand trial on sexual assault charges after he was accused of assaulting a 24-year-old woman at a motel last summer following a charity golf outing.
Cleaves didn't appear at a scheduling hearing in his hometown of Flint Tuesday where the June 28 preliminary hearing date was set, but his lawyer said he was at the courthouse and the judge was satisfied with that.
Cleaves and his lawyer have denied the charges.
Lindsey did not share any details about the potential second victim, only saying there may be another person willing to coming forward.
But what does this mean for the case?
"This is not common at all," said WWJ Legal Analyst Charlie Langton. "When you start having extra victims or extra witnesses kind of pop up at the last minute, something tells me that this might not be the strongest case for the prosecution."
Cleaves led Michigan State to the NCAA basketball championship in 2000. He appeared in 167 games for four NBA teams.
