Competition For Summer Jobs Could Be High Across Michigan

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Across Michigan it could be a tough summer for teens looking for work during their break from school. Analyst Jeff Aula is with the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget.

"What you tend to see in and around April but especially in May is significant increase in the number of teens entering the labor market by sheer numbers that creates high levels of competition," said Aula.

Aula says nearly 233,000 teenagers will be looking for a job.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced on Monday that a summer job program for youths and young adults was getting a $2 million federal boost in the form of a grant.

Duggan's office says roughly 200 employers have committed so far to employ residents between 14 and 24.
