2 Elderly Men Killed In Crash At Red Light In Macomb County

BRUCE TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say two men are dead and another is hospitalized after an accident in northern Macomb County.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Thursday on northbound Van Dyke Avenue just north of 33 Mile Road in Bruce Township.

The Sheriff's Department says 79-year old Donald Lawrence, of Shelby Township, and 80-year old Edwin Kriewall, of Armada, died after their 2000 Chrysler Town & Country minivan crashed into the back of a 1997 Chevy conversion van.

The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to leave the roadway, and caused the conversion van to roll onto its side.

Investigator say traffic was stopped at a red light and Lawrence, who was driving, didn't stop for some unknown reason. He was declared dead at the scene. Kriewall was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 27-year-old driver of the conversion van received minor injuries, and a passenger was seriously injured. Both men were transported to a local hospital. The driver has since been released; The passenger's current condition is unknown.

Van Dyke Avenue was closed for several hours while police investigated the scene, but was re-opened to traffic around 1 a.m. Friday.
