Miguel Cabrera And Cameron Maybin Named The AL Co-Players Of The Week

Teammates Miguel Cabrera and Cameron Maybin of the Detroit Tigers have been named the American League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending May 22nd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Cabrera batted .500 (11-for-22) with six runs scored, a triple, three home runs and six RBI. This marks Cabrera's 14th weekly honor (last winning April 12, 2015), now tying him with Hall of Famer Frank Thomas for third-most all-time. Since the award's inauguration in the National League (1973) and AL (1974), only Manny Ramirez (16) and Barry Bonds (15) have accrued more weekly honors. Miguel finished the week second in the AL in slugging percentage (1.000), third in batting average and total bases (22), tied for third in home runs, hits and triples, sixth in on-base percentage (.538) and tied for sixth in runs scored. On Friday night, Cabrera, a 10-time All-Star, went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in a home tilt against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Venezuelan native now has 35 career multi-homer games and 26 as a member of the Tigers, tying Willie Horton for third-most in Detroit's storied history. Only Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (32) and Cecil Fielder (29) have posted more multi-homer games in a Tigers uniform. In Sunday's matinee against the visiting Rays, the two-time AL MVP went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Cabrera logged four multi-hit games in his award-winning week, and with Sunday's performance, now ranks 10th in club history with 444 multi-hit efforts.

Maybin batted .600 (12-for-20) with five runs scored, a home run, five RBI and four stolen bases. Cameron, winning his second weekly award (also July 24, 2011), paced the Majors in batting average and stolen bases, led his AL counterparts in on-base percentage (.652) and finished second in hits. Detroit's first round pick (10th overall) in the 2005 MLB Draft picked up his fourth stolen base in as many games on Friday night. The speedy outfielder is the first Tigers player to steal a base in four consecutive games since Rajai Davis did so from April 5-11, 2014. It is the second-longest stolen base streak of his career, trailing only a streak of six games from July 19-24, 2011, when he won NL Player of the Week as a member of the San Diego Padres. In Saturday's win over the Rays at Comerica Park, Maybin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a homer and RBI. Coupled with Friday night's three-hit effort, the North Carolina native posted back-to-back three-hit games for the sixth time in his career and first since July 3-4, 2015. Since returning from the DL on May 16th, the 29-year-old veteran has hit safely in each of his six games played, including four multi-hit efforts.

Other noteworthy performances last week included the winners' teammate J.D. Martinez (.385, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 23 TB); Leonys Martin (.550, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 1.050 SLG) of the Seattle Mariners; Mookie Betts (.400, 7 R, 3 HR, 23 TB) of the Boston Red Sox; Khris Davis (.300, 4 HR, 8 RBI, .900 SLG) of the Oakland Athletics; and Chris Sale (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 CG, 9 SO) of the Chicago White Sox.

In recognition of their American League Co-Players of the Week Awards, both Miguel Cabrera and Cameron Maybin will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
