Porcupine Mountains Plans Extensive Memorial Day Weekend Activities

SILVER CITY, Mich. (AP) -- Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is offering recreational and educational opportunities during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

They include close-up looks at live hawks and owls, a visit to a bear den and a hunt for Lake Superior agates.

Park interpreter Bob Wild says the events are designed to showcase and interpret some of the natural resources found in the park on the far western end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Wildlife rehabilitator Joe Rogers will display several live birds during presentations on birds of prey this Saturday and Sunday.

Porcupine Mountains is Michigan's largest state park, featuring old-growth hemlock stands, waterfalls and spectacular vistas.

A recreation passport is required for entry.
