Vandals Destroy Headstones Of Veterans At Flat Rock Cemetery

FLAT ROCK (AP) — Some headstones are in pieces at a cemetery in southeastern Michigan that was the original burial site of a Revolutionary War soldier and his family.

Groundskeeper Ron Klingel says it's a "terrible shame." The Vreeland cemetery in Flat Rock, south of Detroit, was started by Michael Vreeland after the Revolutionary War. He was buried there and eventually was moved. But other descendants who served in wars are buried at Vreeland.

The Flat Rock Historical Society says the cemetery was restored in 2014 with financial help from the city. The group says headstones that were "meticulously repaired a few years ago are again in pieces."

Anyone with information is urged to call Flat Rock police.
