Police ID Juvenile Suspect In Flat Rock Cemetery Vandalism

FLAT ROCK (WWJ) - Police in Flat Rock have tracked down a suspect wanted for vandalizing a cemetery that was the original burial site of a Revolutionary War soldier and his family.

Police say the juvenile suspect was positively identified thanks to tips from the public and information received via social media.

Criminal charges are being sought, but no other information on the suspect was released.

"We are still investigating this heinous crime and will keep you posted on the outcome," police wrote in a post on their Facebook page, thanking the public for their assistance. "It's awesome to see the power of social media and the internet used for good. Your help has certainly helped us to quickly identify a suspect. It's also good to see so many young people wanting to help solve this crime."

The vandalism was discovered over the Memorial Day weekend at Vreeland Cemetery, a family plot located near a bike path at western edge of Huroc Park. Several headstones, which were restored in 2014, were broken and left in pieces.

An investigation into the vandalism is ongoing.

Meantime, donations are coming in from across the country to help repair the broken headstones. The Flat Rock Historical Society is still working to get estimates on the repair costs.
