State Develops Plan To Reduce Sulfur Dioxide In Detroit Area
DETROIT (AP) - State officials have developed a plan to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in southern Wayne County.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality said Tuesday the plan has been submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for final approval.
It's designed to ensure that air in Detroit and surrounding communities meets a health-based standard for sulfur dioxide, a significant air pollutant that can cause respiratory illness and acid rain.
The plan requires two power plants, a limestone kiln and a steel operation to make substantial reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions during the next 2 ½ years.
