'We Just Still Have Too Much Violence' Says Detroit Police Chief After Drug House Triple Killing

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are still searching for answers a day following the shooting deaths of three people inside a west side home.

Chief James Craig says there have been no arrests but they're following up on tips in the killings at a known drug house on Brace Street near Warren and Southfield roads.

Three young men, including a teenager, died in gunfire Monday at around 5 a.m.  Media reports have identified the victims as 25-year-old Deangelo Owens, 21-year-old Eric Durham and 15-year-old Jaden Dorris of Detroit.

At one point Michigan State Police had to assist Detroit police in crowd control an emotional crowd of more than a hundred gathered in the early stages of the investigation.

"Whether there's one, two or three, I mean, it's all disturbing," the chief said, at a news conference on another matter Tuesday.

Craig conceded that, when compared with last year, the city's homicide rate is higher.

"And again, we're fighting last year's statistics; we had a low year," said Craig. "But still, we just still have too much violence...and overall crime is still down in the city, but the work continues."

Authorities told WWJ's Charlie Langton that they have raided the Brace Street house twice recently and that the killings may have been a targeted hit, but the mother of one of the victims denied that drugs could have been involved.

Owens' mother, Angela Owens-Brown, said she has 12 children and seven of them have died as a result of violence in the city. She said Owens was the father of five kids, all under the age of seven.

As of Tuesday, there had been no arrests in the case.
