Sheriff: Elderly Man Who Threatened Deputy Dies Following Shooting

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - An elderly man shot by an Upper Peninsula sheriff's deputy after authorities say he threatened officers with a weapon has died.

The man died Thursday after the shooting at a home in the Marquette County community of Ishpeming, The Mining Journal reported. Sheriff's officials say officers responded following reports of a suicidal man.

Authorities say they tried unsuccessfully to calm the man, who pointed shotgun at a deputy. The deputy fired his weapon at the man and requested an ambulance.

Sheriff's officials haven't identified the victim or officer involved.

An investigation of the incident will be handled by the Michigan State Police and reviewed by the prosecutor's office.
